Before I get on with this article (my final one for awhile), Id like to take a moment to apologize to you for something.

These articles are in electronic format and can be easily sent to other people (in fact, I encourage you to send it to your friends). Because of this, I had to hold back on what I offer in them. Heres why

Using Magick energy to make things happen, is very different from having the secrets to control it. The art of Witchcraft is one that should be approached carefully. You should never pick up a book on Witchcraft, read the spells and then try to do them. You need to SEE somebody doing not only the spells but the important techniques of connecting with, and controlling, your own Magick energy.

The truth is, there is no way for me to actually show you these techniques in articles like the ones I have written. And I am worried that if I lay out all of the steps for the spells, rituals, and other Witchcraft techniques in full, they may be abused (even unknowingly abused) by raw beginners getting in tune with Magick energy for the first time.

This could cause unthinkable problems, and it would be difficult to live with myself knowing that these articles caused anybody harm.

What To Look Out For When You’re Buying Travel Books

Surely everyone loves a good travel book but sometimes they can be disappointing, more often, say, than a recipe or handcraft book. There are ways to avoid missing the bus.

Before forking out pounds for a travel book, ask yourself the following: am I in love with the idea of this book or the book itself? Take for example a book entitled “Gorgeous Morocco”. Are you in love with the idea of glorious Morocco or the book you are holding in your hand? To establish this you need to ask: what is the purpose of buying this book?

If you are planning a trip to Morocco and it’s nuts-and-bolts information you are seeking, then it is no good buying the incoherent ramblings of a traveling school teacher in the 1950′s. It’s also no good being attracted by the photographs, because photos do lie and hardly constitute hard information. If you are simply keen on reading and learning about Morocco in general, then a book written from any angle will do, unless it is something completely off-beam, like a book written in the 1920′s by a missionary, called “How I Converted Four Heathens In Morocco”.

If it’s useful travel information you are after, ask yourself: is this book up to date and properly researched? If you are holding a book called “Mainland Greece”, for instance, do a quick test. Think of a town in mainland Greece you know, such as Thrace, and see how quickly it takes to locate the section on Thrace and how useful the information is concerning accommodation, transport, restaurants, attractions, etc.

Easy-to-navigate handbooks with great indexes are just the ticket. They should be compact, so you can fit them in your hand luggage and cheap enough that if you lose them you don’t mind. The rule of thumb is that a few illustrative photographs are good they show serious intent on the part of author and publisher to inform you but too many photographs diminish the quality and quantity of the usable information. There should be concise historical nuggets and handy insider travel tips. There should also be complementary online resources listed for up-to-the-minute information.

If it’s not practical information you are after, but you want to feed your travel dreams and inform yourselves about countries through the ages then ask: who wrote this book? There has been a “colonization” of countries through travel writing. I mean that certain writers in English writing have become inextricably linked with writings about certain countries. They are quite simply the last word on the subject.

The quality of travel writer you want when you are reading for dreaming and escapism is completely different from the quality of writer you seek when it’s current useful data you are after.

If you are after visuals and looking through a pictorial travel book, then you should ask:

how much has the photographer introduced of hisher own vision into the book? There is nothing that puts a traveler’s teeth on edge more than paging through a book on Rome and seeing the same old perspectives of the Coliseum and the Spanish Steps. If the photographer and the person who wrote the text (there will always be some text in a pictorial travel book) has not introduced some personal theme or perspective then you don’t really have a travel book worthy of the name.

Excellent examples are the photographic scrapbooks of Peter Beard who resided in East Africa and was obsessed with elephants. You won’t find one photo of the Serengeti Plain or Kilimanjaro in any of his books, which is why he such a much-collected author and photographer and why you will struggle to find a copy of these long out-of-print masterpieces.

Want Your Children To Love Books – Go See A Movie!

Reading a book from which a movie is made is almost always a richer experience than simply watching the movie. The experience of savoring the words on the page and allowing yourself to be taken on a journey inspired by the author is sublime. As the author paints a picture with words, your imagination fills in the blanks until the voices of the characters and the images of the settings resonate in your mind.

After reading and thoroughly enjoying a well-written book, watching the movie adaptation can be an interesting experience. The voices and images from your imagination are contrasted by those created by the actors, the director, and the cinematographer. It’s not that the experience of watching a movie adaptation is necessarily bad – it’s simply different. It presents a wonderful opportunity to demonstrate to your children the difference between words on a page and images on a screen – and to have a great family experience in the process.

Almost without fail, your children will agree that while they enjoyed the movie, the experience created by their own imagination is better. Demonstrating to your child that their imagination is more powerful than a hollywood blockbuster is a very liberating and supportive exercise. Believe it or not, going through this process of reading a great book and then seeing the movie actually reinforces your child’s love of reading as well as the use of their imagination!

If you want to go all out, dress in costume to see the movie. Afterwards, discuss how the movie differed from the book, and, more importantly, how it differed from the scenes created in family members’ imaginations.

You can follow the same process by reading The Chronicles of Narnia prior to seeing the movie. Younger children may enjoy hearing the classic tale of Chicken Little prior to seeing the Disney movie of the same name. Discuss the moral of the story, and, after watching the movie, talk about how the storyline in the movie demonstrated the principles of the classic.

The Top 5 Sports Books Of All Time

There have been thousands of sports books written throughout the years. Some have been absolute crap and most are mediocre at best, but there are that select few that remain deep-seated in our memories as classics. Below is my Top 5 of all time. There are some popular books missing either because I dont think it is as good as everyone else, or because I havent read it.

5. Foul Ball, By Jim Bouton – Bouton gives a candid look at a corrupt sports town. All he wants to do is keep a classic stadium alive, but local businesses and politicians oppose him for selfish reasons. They will do whats right for their businesses regardless of the effects on the community. Beyond sports, their actions also are detrimental to the health and well being of those who live there. It’s amazing how greedy and selfish some people can be…and Bouton exposes them ALL.

4. Eight Men Out, By Eliot Asinof – This was a very, very interesting read and that is why I rate it so high. I am absolutely obsessed with the perplexing depth of this scandal. However Asinof presents a TON of evidence about the scandal, so much so that it can be a bit overwhelming. I probably need to go back and read it again to get the whole story down. It reads a lot like a really good history book about the Black Sox.

3. Friday Night Lights, By H.G. Bissinger – One of the things that drives me nuts about Odessa is that H.G. Bissinger wrote a very fair observation of the current state of their town and they treat him like he’s the devil to this day. Rather than acknowledge that maybe they shouldn’t put so much pressure on their young athletes and that maybe they needed to re-evaluate what is truly important to them, they chose to shoot the messenger. Maybe people shouldn’t be taught that the most important thing in the world is a high-school football game. I applaud Bissinger for his efforts.

2. Moneyball, By Michael Lewis – This is an absolutely amazing story about success. The book is far more than baseball – it shows the value of statistical analysis in equalizing and unequal playing field. Like the cover says, it teaches the ‘Art of Winning an Unfair Game’. I can’t stand narrow minded baseball purists that don’t see the value in what Billy Beane does. The man succeeds in spite of nearly insurmountable odds. Who couldnt learn something from him?

1. Ball Four, By Jim Bouton – This is one of the most entertaining books I’ve ever read. Who wouldn’t enjoy reading stories about Mickey Mantle and his crazy flings? Bouton’s stories were so controversial that he was banished from the Yankee community for a long time. He is so honest and down to earth that by the end of the book it feels like Bouton is one of your buddies. All sports fans NEED to read this.
